Elliott Carter

Elliott CarterElliott Carter was born in 1908 in New York City. During high school, he became interested in music and was encouraged to pursue it by Charles Ives. He studied at Harvard University under Walter Piston and later studied for three years with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. He devoted the rest of his life to composing and teaching. His works include Variations for Orchestra, Symphony of Three Orchestras, Double Concerto for Harpsichord, Piano and Two Chamber Orchestras (1961), Piano Concerto (1967), and many concertos and string quartets. Carter received the Pulitzer Prize in 1960 for his work in string quartet repertoire and Aaron Copland proclaims Carter to be “one of America’s most distinguished creative artists in any field.”
